Boundaries and comparisons

Areas of the pre-2000 structures (no delimitation on record); no boundary geometry is held, so areas are listed by name and code and never drawn on another delimitation's map.

Nationally and by province this election compares with every other national & Provincial election. By municipality: no other election is on the same delimitation, so municipal results are listed per election and never side by side. Wards are compared only within one delimitation.

About this record

Coverage, limitations, source issues and how the figures were checked

What the record holds

  • Available: national-ballot votes for each party by province and in total, National Assembly seats, and each provincial legislature's votes and seats by party. Not available: registered voters, votes cast, spoilt votes, turnout, and any result below province level. None of these is estimated.
  • Provincial boundaries have changed since 1994; results are not drawn on today's provincial map.

Historical context

  • The 1994 elections were run by the Independent Electoral Commission established for that election, not by today's Electoral Commission. The current IEC states that this document is the only election data it has for 1994.
  • The document notes that after the 1994 elections four provinces were renamed: Eastern Transvaal became Mpumalanga, Northern Transvaal became Northern Province (later Limpopo), Orange Free State became Free State and PWV (Pretoria–Witwatersrand–Vereeniging) became Gauteng. The 1994 names are shown with these results.

Source issues

  • The national results table lists parties by abbreviation only (e.g. PAC, VV-FF, ANC). They are kept as printed and are not matched to the full names on the provincial pages, which the document does not pair with the abbreviations.

How it was read and checked

  • Election date: Polling day as the IEC results portal names the event ("27 APR 1994 NATIONAL ELECTION").
  • Read from the document's tables: the national table's nine provinces add up to its printed totals for every party (19 parties, 19 533 498 valid votes), and the seats add up to the printed 400 nationally and to each legislature's printed total.
