South Africa’s Electoral Record

Explore South African elections across the democratic era: who stood, how many voted and what each party received — from the official results, with the source of every figure and a plain statement of what each election’s record does and does not hold.

Latest verified results

Results are recorded from approved official loads only. A ballot is partial where the source leaves a field unstated; a gap is a dated entry naming what was searched and the source that would fill it. Areas of different municipal delimitations are never compared as the same area, and missing is never shown as zero.

Timeline, 1994 to 2024

Turnout over time

National & Provincial

National & Provincial turnout: 1999 89,4%, 2004 76,7%, 2009 77,3%, 2014 73,5%, 2019 66,1%, 2024 58,6%; not stated for 1994.

Municipal by-elections

A by-election fills one ward’s vacancy between local elections. Each is recorded as its own election, linked to the term it falls in, so it never replaces the ward’s general-election result. 191 by-election days, 9 November 2016 to 24 June 2026, with named candidates and the IEC’s seat awards. Where the results come from

Every result is from the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC): its downloadable voting-district results for 1999–2024, and for 1994 the only record it holds, a summary by province. Each election page lists the files used, their retrieval date and SHA-256 fingerprint, and how the totals were checked against the IEC’s own reports. Sources and licences
