395 of 400 seats are listed

Parliament’s roster, read on 8 October 2026, lists 395 current members. The other 5 seats are shown as not listed: the roster does not say why, and no one is put in them. The majority threshold is still more than half of the whole chamber.

How to read the chamber

  • Each chair is one of the National Assembly’s 400 seats, coloured by the party Parliament’s roster lists its member under.
  • Parties sit in blocks, largest first from the left — ordered by their seats, not by any political position.
  • 201 seats are a majority: more than half of 400. Add parties below to see whether their seats reach it.
  • 5 seats are not listed by the roster: shown empty, never given to a party.
  • Use the arrow keys once the chamber has focus (Page Up and Page Down move between parties). Reset, or Escape, starts again.

Planned

Changes to the chamber will appear here once a reading of Parliament’s roster records them. The roster on the record, read on 8 October 2026, lists current members only, so no change is shown.

Hypothetical arithmetic, not a prediction: add parties to see whether their seats, as Parliament’s roster lists them, add up to a majority of the chamber. It says nothing about which parties would or should work together.

Where these figures come from

Members and seats per party: Parliament of South Africa — All Members, National Assembly, published by Parliament of the Republic of South Africa; read 8 October 2026. A party’s seats are the members the roster lists for it — counted, not estimated.

Size of the chamber: 400 seats, as recorded for the National Assembly from the IEC’s 2024 seat calculation. The threshold is calculated from it: more than half, 201.

Election results: the IEC’s official results are on the 2024 National and Provincial Elections page. The IEC’s seat allocation to each party is not yet in the record, so this page does not show it.

Notes on the roster

  • CoverageParliament of the Republic of South Africa lists 395 current members, as at 2026-10-08 (the date the list was retrieved; the roster states no date). The IEC's 2024 seat calculation allocated 400 seats.
  • LimitationThe roster's count differs from the 2024 seats for 2 parties: economic-freedom-fighters 37 listed, 39 seats; umkhonto-wesizwe 55 listed, 58 seats. Vacancies, replacements and changes since 2024 are not stated by the roster; it is shown as published.
  • MethodLists current members with full name, party (Parliament's abbreviation), and whether the member came from a national list or a province's regional list. No start dates or terms are stated.
  • MethodEach member is matched to a 2024 candidate only by an identical name, or by a compatible name (same surname; given names or initials in order) that is unique on the member's own party lists: 348 identical, 5 compatible. 42 members are recorded separately, 12 with possible matches awaiting an editor's decision.
