Petitions
Ask your ward council, municipal council, provincial legislature or Parliament to act. A moderator checks every petition before it goes live. Signing needs a free account, one signature per person, and your name stays private unless you choose to show your first name.

How a petition works here
- You start it in your free account: a title, what you are asking for, who it is addressed to and a signature goal.
- A moderator checks it against the rules below. If it is not accepted, you see why.
- Once it is live, people sign with their own account, once each. Only the count is public, plus the first name and ward of signers who choose to show them.
- When it reaches its goal or closes, Mandate SA prepares a delivery pack for the body it is addressed to: the total, counts by ward, and only the names signers chose to show.
The rules every petition follows
- It asks a public body (a council, a provincial legislature or Parliament) to do something within its powers.
- No hate speech, and nothing that targets people because of their nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality or a similar trait.
- No accusations against named private individuals.
- No campaigning for or against a party or a candidate.
- Plain text only: no links, web addresses, phone numbers or email addresses.
Petitioning Parliament formally
A petition here is a public show of support. Parliament also has its own formal process, under sections 56(d) and 69(d) of the Constitution: a petition is lodged with the Secretary to Parliament, checked, and referred to a committee. Mandate SA is not part of that process.
